Wildlife

deerThe current drought has been bringing a great deal of wildlife closer and closer to humans as the animals seek water and food.

We ask that community members recognize that wildlife, just by its very presence, does not represent a danger or nuisance, but in situations where wild animals are causing problems, call us at (512) 930-3592 and we will do what we can to assist in alleviating the nuisance.

Often information alone is sufficient to resolve a situation.

FAQ

What do I do about skunks in my yard and/or garage?

1. We have a fairly large population of skunks in Georgetown. They are beneficial members of the ecosystem and food chain. They prey on small rodents and insects. The only time to be alarmed or concerned about their presence is if they appear obviously sick, which would include them being out and active in daylight. They may be active at dawn or dusk, but during definite daylight hours, they are normally not seen.

What if I suspect a wild animal has rabies and may have been near my dog?

2. We would recommend contact with the pet owner’s veterinarian.

I feel sorry for them, is it safe to feed them?

3. Feeding of wildlife is in violation of many Home Owner’s Association rules and can result in many negative consequences. The animal staying where it is fed and causing a nuisance is the most common issue. Animal Services will not trap and relocate wild animals from premises where people are encouraging the presence of the wild animals by providing them with food or water.
