Adoption

The Animal Shelter usually has a variety of cats and dogs for adoption into new homes. Use the menu to the left to search the shelter’s current inhabitants. “Found Dogs” and “Found Cats” are not currently available for adoption. These are animals that have been picked up or turned into the shelter and are awaiting reclamation by their owners. If the animal is not claimed within a certain period of time, the animal will be listed under the menu choice “Adoptable Pets.”

Most shelter pets make wonderful, loving additions to a family. We adopt out everything from purebred dogs and cats to mutts and mixed breeds of almost every shape and color imaginable. The application/screening process for potential adopters usually takes about 24 hours except when it falls over a weekend or holiday, and then it may take two or three days. We ask that potential adopters please be patient with us; we are only trying our best to ensure that the homeless pets in our care get the best possible home. All cats and dogs adopted from our shelter are spayed or neutered (as Texas law mandates).

Our adoption fee is currently $70 for non-residents and $75 for residents*.

The adoption fee includes:

  • spaying/neutering
  • vaccinations (appropriate to species and age)
  • heartworm or feline leukemia test (appropriate to species and age)
  • de-worming medication
  • microchip (a tiny ID tag inserted under the skin, which allows your pet to be returned to you quickly)

There is a $5 Pet License fee added to the adoption fee if the adopter lives inside the City Limits of Georgetown.

* If you are a senior citizen, please see the Senior-to-Senior Program description below for information on how to adopt a pet without charge

Pets in our shelter that do not get adopted are eventually destroyed.

A few things to remember when considering adopting a pet:

Before you adopt a dog, we encourage you to introduce any current dogs to the one you are considering.  If the dogs are not going to get along, we’d rather find that out at the shelter!  Please consider carefully before adopting a pet from us or anywhere else. You should be willing to make a fifteen-year commitment to a new pet, providing it with whatever it needs for its physical, mental and emotional well-being for the rest of its natural life. Cats and dogs are totally dependent on us for their needs if they are to have a good quality of life. Puppies and kittens are lots of fun, but please remember they will be adult dogs and cats in a year or so.

Senior to Senior Program

pio1209410540The Georgetown Animal Shelter sees a lot of broken hearts, and its usually older animals who, though they’ve lost their youthful appearance, still want nothing more than a family to love them.

Older animals are brought to the shelter for a variety of reasons, but they are much more likely to be passed over when a family comes in to look for a new pet. Most older animals would be happy to have a new home, yet many do not get readily adopted.

Senior to Senior Program -
Recognizing the need for older animals to find good homes, the City has started Senior to Senior. This program has two components. First, it allows senior citizens to adopt senior animals at no charge. Second, the program encourages seniors and non-seniors alike to consider older animals by educating the public of the benefits.

Often, people are looking for a calm pet, and senior animals just want a quiet home to spend their golden years and a warm lap and friendly face to love them back. Sun City residents and Shelter volunteers, Curt and Mo R. (pictured at right) adopted one such “senior” animal, Teddy, an Australian Cattle Dog.

“Teddy is just the perfect pet” says Curt, “he is my constant companion, and I can’t believe how much joy he has brought to our lives. My wife and I are crazy about him, and he seems as equally happy.“
